Our Worship What You Can Expect |
|
Worship is certainly not limited to church gatherings-it is an attitude of praise and celebration for the new life we enjoy through Jesus. We do, however, place a high priority on our worship assemblies, and encourage all our members to attend consistently. There is something about worshipping together that is unique from other forms of worship. Though God is always present with us, Scripture calls special attention to the presence of God among those assembled in His name. This is also one of our primary opportunities to engage one another as a community. Our assemblies should never be an experience of empty religious ritual or duty, but a joyful celebration of God, family, and fellowship. We strive to make our assemblies challenging, encouraging, and relational. At most Sunday morning gatherings, you can expect the morning to be organized around a particular theme or focus. Songs, readings, and other worship activities have been selected to help the congregation focus on this theme. Though many elements of our service are planned in advance, we try to avoid becoming overprogrammed or excessively formal in our worship. We want to leave room for God's Spirit to direct us in ways we may not anticipate. The order and content of our worship assembly may vary, but you will notice a handful of very consistent elements: We share the Lord's Supper. Shortly before his crucifixion, Jesus initiated this practice of using bread and wine as symbols of His own body and blood. Rooted in the Jewish celebration of Passover, the Lord's Supper (sometimes called the Communion) is a simple reminder of His love and sacrifice for us. We welcome all committed believers in Christ to participate in this sacrament. We hear from God's Word. As disciples on a spiritual journey, we consider it a special privilege to seek encouragement and challenges from Biblical readings and preaching, and to apply these to our lives. We praise God in song. Our worship music is a blend of contemporary praise choruses and traditional hymns. A unique feature of our worship is our rich tradition of acapella (without instruments) music. We spend time in prayer. Through prayer we share with God our thanks, our love, and our repentance. We seek God's power to combat spiritual and physical illnesses and to overcome evil. In most assemblies we are led in prayer by an individual, but it is also a common practice for us to have a time of open prayer in which everyone has an opportunity to add their own thoughts, hurts, and hopes. |
