What can my child(ren) do during the worship assembly?

If your children are under three years of age, there is a nursery available through the hallway at the back of the auditorium. Simply take your child to the nursery at any time and check them in. On most Sundays, a children's worship called 'Promise Place' is offered for children from age three up through the fifth grade. Children participating in Promise Place typically stay with the adults for the first portion of the worship assembly. They will be dismissed before the sermon. Of course, if your children are especially shy, or if you would like them to stay with you for any reason, they are always welcome in the assembly.

What is "Family Sunday?"

Once a month (typically the third Sunday of the month) we celebrate Family Sunday. Basically, this means there is no Promise Place and all children above three years are encouraged to stay through the entire worship assembly. The format is usually altered to divide the morning up. Instead of a half hour sermon, a few five minute devotional thoughts might be offered, scattered through the worship time. Sometimes the children are called to the center for a special activity or message. We try to make the morning "kid friendly." It's an opportunity for our entire church family to worship together, and it helps prepare our children for their eventual transition out of Promise Place into the larger assembly.

Why do you meet in a circle?

If you are accustomed to a more traditional church environment, you may be a little uncomfortable, at first, in our circular seating arrangement. Try it out! We think you will come to enjoy it. We tried it one Sunday some time back and liked it so much we kept it. We think it enriches our experience of worship as a community by making our time together more personal and friendly.

What denomination is this?

We were first established in this area as The Evergreen Church of Christ, affiliated with the 'Churches of Christ,' an internationally established church which emerged from the 'Restoration Movement' which swept through much of America around the turn of the 19th century. In recent years, reforms and church members who have come to us from other backgrounds have altered our fellowship, giving us an atmosphere in many ways similar to a non-denominational community church. We are now The Evergreen Community Church of Christ, committed to being the church God is calling us to be at this time and place, while retaining the positive ideals of our historical ties.

Where are the instruments?

One of the first things people notice about our Sunday morning service is the absence of musical instruments. The Church of Christ, especially in the southern states, has historically favored non-instrumental music for worship. As a result, we have cultivated a rich tradition of acapella (voices only) music, which we still honor today at our Sunday worship assembly. We do, however, use and enjoy instruments at other worship gatherings and events.

Shouldn't it say "live differently?"

Those of you who are sticklers about good grammar often remind us that the proper way to express our community outreach slogan would be "live differently." Just as commercial organizations take liberties with the English language for their marketing campaigns, our grammatical error is made on purpose. The intent of the campaign is to compel people to consider the countercultural, non-conformist call of Jesus. It seems appropriate, then, to choose an expression which, itself, does not conform to all cultural rules.
